Shopify meta descriptions: why product pages need them and how to fill the gaps
Last updated: 31 July 2026
A meta description is the snippet under your page title in search results. Shopify exposes it per product as the SEO description. Leave it empty and Google composes a snippet itself, usually by grabbing whatever text it finds first on the page.
Why it matters
The meta description is not a direct ranking factor, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling it. What it does affect is whether someone clicks. When Google auto-generates the snippet on a product page, it often pulls shipping boilerplate, a size chart fragment, or the first line of a description written for someone already on the page — none of which reads like a reason to click.
Writing it yourself is the difference between a snippet that answers the searcher's question and one that happens to be the first sentence on the page.
Finding products without one
Shopify shows the SEO section at the bottom of each product page, collapsed by default, which is precisely why it goes unfilled. There is no admin filter for "products with an empty SEO description". A CSV export includes the field, so you can sort for blanks, but you are then editing spreadsheets rather than fixing the catalog.
Writing one that works
- Aim for roughly 140–160 characters. Longer gets truncated; much shorter wastes the space.
- Lead with what the product is and its most distinguishing attribute — material, size, use.
- Write for the person deciding whether to click, not for a crawler. Keyword stuffing reads as spam to both.
- Make it specific to the product. One template applied across the catalog produces duplicate descriptions, which is its own problem — Catamend flags that separately as duplicate_seo_description.
How Catamend handles it
The missing_seo_description rule reports every product with an empty SEO description. The one-click fix composes a description from the product's real attributes — title, type, vendor — rather than generating marketing prose, and writes only where the field is still empty.
This is one of the checks marked review recommended: the generated text is a reasonable default that beats an empty field and an auto-generated snippet, but a description you write yourself for a hero product will beat both. Fix the long tail automatically, write the important ones by hand.
